When you hear “African safari,” what pops into your head?
Lions? Of course.
Elephants? You bet.
Khaki outfits with an unnecessary number of pockets?! Sure 😉
But saying you want to “go on safari” is a little like saying you want to “go to Europe.”
We’ve got some narrowing down to do.
Because the safari I’d plan for honeymooners could look very different from the one I’d plan for a family with teenagers, or someone finally taking the bucket-list trip they’ve dreamed about for 20 years.
So, which safari sounds most like you? Let’s figure it out together ↓

You want adventure, but you also want this to feel like a honeymoon.
Start with a safari in Tanzania’s Serengeti, where you can spend your days spotting lions, elephants, and plenty more, with intimate lodges, romantic dinners, and a few extra-special touches along the way.
Then, after several days spotted with game drives, hop a short flight to Zanzibar for white-sand beaches, turquoise water, and a few blissfully lazy days of doing absolutely nothing.
Safari + beach? Now that feels like a honeymoon.
🗓️ When To Go: June through October is generally peak safari season, with drier weather and excellent wildlife viewing, but also higher demand and pricing. Shoulder and low seasons come with their own perks + tradeoffs!
⏰ How Long to Stay: Give yourself around 10–14 days for the full safari + beach combo. That gives you enough time for several safari days in Tanzania before slowing waaaaaay down in Zanzibar, without spending your entire honeymoon packing, unpacking, and catching flights.

Elephants at the zoo? Neat!
But seeing an elephant in the wild?! That’s the kind of moment you never forget.
South Africa is a fantastic place to start, especially for families looking for a safari that can easily become part of a bigger adventure. Spend a few days spotting wildlife in Kruger National Park, then head to Cape Town for beaches, penguins, incredible scenery, and plenty to do beyond game drives.
The key here is choosing the right safari experience for the ages of your kids. Some lodges and activities have age restrictions, while others are specifically designed with families in mind, so this is one trip where the details really matter.
🗓️ When To Go: May through September brings drier conditions and excellent wildlife viewing around Kruger, while the wetter months bring lush green landscapes and new baby animals, but wildlife can be harder to spot through thicker vegetation.
⏰ How Long to Stay: Around 10–12 days gives you time for a few safari days plus Cape Town without asking the whole family to relocate every 48 hours.

This is the “we’ve been talking about doing this for 20+ years, and we’re finally going!” safari itinerary.
For a milestone birthday, retirement trip, or simply a gigantic check off the bucket list, this is where you can go big. Think Rwanda, where you can trek through the forests of Volcanoes National Park for the chance to spend an unforgettable hour with mountain gorillas in the wild.
And because this is the trip? You don’t necessarily have to stop there! Pair Rwanda with a classic safari in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, where you can swap misty mountain forests for wide-open savanna, big cats, and a completely different kind of wildlife experience.
If you’ve waited this long to get to Africa, you shouldn’t race through it. Let’s build the trip around the experiences that have been living on your bucket list for years.
🗓️ When To Go: Gorilla trekking happens year-round, but the drier seasons (generally June–September and December–February) can make trekking conditions a little easier.
⏰ How Long to Stay: Give yourself around 10–14 days if you’re pairing Rwanda with a safari elsewhere. You did not fly halfway around the world for a four-night “quick trip.”
Maybe you’re reading this thinking, “Uhhhh, I’m the honeymooner who also wants the bucket-list version with a little milestone-level splurging.”
PERFECT.
These aren’t packages you have to pick from! They’re proof that there’s no single way to “do” safari.
Where you go, where you stay, how long you spend there, and what you pair with it should depend on who you are and what you want this trip to feel like.
And if right now all you know is “I want to go on safari”? That’s plenty to start with. I can help you narrow down the rest! 🦁
